Smartwatches: What are they and how do they work?

When news broke that Apple, the maker of the iPhone, among other products, had registered a patent for the manufacture of a smart watch, fans and enthusiasts of the brand rushed to call it iWatch. The gadget hit the market in early 2015 under the name of  Apple Watch , but many people still call it iWatch.

The smart watch offers interactions and technologies and promises greater precision in counting the time, being able to customize the way the time is displayed on the screen and even the way in which it reacts to alerts – the device gives a simple touch on the skin when the user receives a message, for example.

The device has an application for physical activities that shows the evolution and motivates the user, presenting statistics in real time about the performance. The design is innovative, with excellent aesthetics for the user to “enjoy using the watch as much as they will like its features”.

Galaxy Gear – Samsung Samsung

‘s Galaxy Gear line   has a 1.63-inch screen, with 320 x 320 pixel resolution, single-core 800 MHz Exynos processor, 512 MB memory and 4 GB of storage.

The device’s battery is 315 mAh and it offers Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity, accelerometer, gyroscope, audio output, microphone (including for voice command), among other features. The brand’s smartwatches also have a camera on the bracelet – medium quality photos (only 1.9 megapixel) without a flash.

SmartWear – Sony Sony

‘s line of smart watches is called  SmartWear . There are two formats of devices currently on the market, the 3 SWR50, which has a music player, physical activity monitor and various sensors (compass, accelerometer, turn, GPS); and the  SmartBand SWR10 , which has a design totally focused on physical activities – thinner and more malleable -, applications for connecting to the smartphone and monitoring activities, etc.

Smart watches: from fantasy to reality

In conclusion, smartwatches are not new. They’ve been populating consumer fantasies for many years – who doesn’t remember Star Trek captain Kirk, who wore a watch to communicate with the Enterprise ship? What about the 007 franchise, and how easy was James Bond to push a button on his smart watch and explode bombs?

The challenge for manufacturers, however, is to create technological solutions that meet the needs of consumers. For smartwatches to be accepted as consumer products, they need to solve real day-to-day problems and be simple to use – a challenge that manufacturers are committed to solving – just look at the examples we mentioned above.

On the other hand, the success of smartwatches is also linked to the adherence of app developers – today, according to Época magazine, 80% of apps that run on smart watches are based on Google’s Android operating system. Apple’s entry into the race for the smart watch market leaves no doubt, they will soon be a fever.

Smartwatches: is it worth buying a smart watch?

The wave of wearable accessories, or wearables, is with everything. They are bracelets, glasses and, of course, smart watches. The latter is the flagship of this fashion and can also be called a smartwatch. It aims to make the information found on the user’s smartphone faster and easier. 

The negative point is its value, which is equivalent to that of an average cell phone: – a Sony device can be found on the market for R $ 1,299, while a Samsung watch costs R $ 1,499 and a Motorola watch for R $ 1,099 .

 “With a very high potential for functionality, the benefits related to health and well-being are what most call the attention of Brazilians when buying a smartwatch”, says Renato Citrini, senior manager of the mobile devices area at Samsung Brazil.

Other features that stand out are answering calls, answering commands through voice, internal storage for files, exclusive applications and GPS.

Although it has not yet effectively fallen into popular taste, Citrini guarantees that Brazilians are beginning to understand the benefits and advantages of having a wearable. “Consumers have come to see that a smart watch can make their daily lives easier and bring more modernity and performance to their lives,” he says

“The smart accessories market is still in the process of stabilizing in the country,” explains Joe Takata, product manager at Sony Mobile in Brazil. “The trend is always to look for innovative devices that make life easier for consumers. Therefore, our watches are designed so that the user does not even have to worry about taking it off their wrist. They even have a waterproof function. and long battery life. “

Manufacturers do not comment on sales performance, but guarantee that the demand for smart watches has exceeded expectations.

Negative side

As much as companies are optimistic, some information reveals that the scenario is not going so well.

In 2014, for example, only 720,000 watches with Android Wear out of a total of 4.6 million wearable devices were sold worldwide. The data released by Canalys, which specializes in mobile research, also point out that Motorola’s Moto 360 was the leader in the segment, despite not saying how many units were sold.

One of the possible reasons for the public’s lack of interest is the suggested price. The value of a smartwatch is equivalent to that of an average cell phone (4 GB of storage, 1.2 GHz processor and 8 MP camera). A Sony device can be found on the market for R$ 1,299, while a Samsung watch costs R $ 1,499 and a Motorola watch costs R $ 1,099.

When typing “smartwatch” on Reclame Aqui, a page that gathers consumer complaints, some issues appear. There are more than 120 problems registered, with Sony being the champion in complaints (38 in total). The brand is followed by Samsung (18) and Motorola (12). 

Among the complaints are: fragility, low battery, overheating and problems with loading after updating the operating system.

 As much as the products still make some mistakes, the gadget is on the rise. Apple promises to capture 75% of the smartwatch market and sell 4 million devices by the end of the year around the world. The data from Strategy Analytics, specialized in market analysis, also point out that the second largest seller will be Samsung with a forecast of 700 thousand units.

Smartwatches: Seculus presents three models of smart watches

With the growth of wearable technological accessories, companies that were previously considered more traditional, decided to enter the tech market and this is the case of Seculus, which further expanded its catalog by announcing three new models of smart watches.

The three models have several features, but there are small variations between them, one for example, with a greater focus on sports and the other more focused on the fashion side.

Smart Sport Version

All versions have heart rate, sleep, calorie monitoring, in addition, it presents notifications received on the smartphone, a mode called “multi-sport”, camera control, among other common functions in current smartwatchs.

In addition, the three models have water resistance and apparently have a body that resists impacts well, emphasizing that nothing has been said about it, being just a well done construction.

Smart Fashion Version

Among the three models presented, we have Smart Sport, Urban and Fashion, the main difference between them being the design.

Smart Urban Version

However, there are other variations between each model, such as the fact that Smart Sport is the only one that comes with GPS and audio recorder, music and altitude control, in addition to the sedentary alert. The fashion version also has a sedentary alert, while Urbano presents the option to change the bracelet.

The values ​​gradually increase, where the Urban model is expected to cost R $ 799, while Fashion is expected to cost R $ 899 and finally, the most expensive is Sport, which has a forecast of R $ 1,100.
